Welcome to NorCal Aussie Rescue, a California State nonprofit public benefit corporation. Our Federal Tax ID number: # 26-0076953. We rescue, evaluate and then place wonderful Australian Shepherds in just the right new home. This takes time! We do not adopt out of state.

Aussies can be moderately active to extremely active, needy or independent, child-friendly or child-intolerant. Aussies are not always good with children. Most of our Aussies are strays and we cannot be assured they are good with children. Read more about Aussies: Is An Aussie the Right Dog For You.

Please make sure you view our Shelter Listings as well as the Related Links because there are many nice dogs in shelters that have very limited time. Choosing the best possible home for each individual dog is a very time consuming task - please be patient! If you are interested in adopting one of our Aussies, please fill out an Adoption Application. If you've submitted an application, please be patient...we receive 20-30 applications per day. Thank you!

Each dog gets at least one trip to the vet for vaccinations, tests, getting altered, and to have any health concerns addressed. On-going expenses for the Sanctuary dogs include Solid Gold food (we get wholesale), treats, beds, and collars. Not including vet bills, our typical expenses are $400-$500 per month. Please consider an ongoing monthly donation to sponsor a Foster Dog. Thank you Ken & Phyllis, Tootie, Paula and Meri for your monthly gifts! Donating is simple and quick with PayPal!

A Message from Kim
5/6/08

Today we hiked in the snow! I piled 12 dogs into the van and off we went to Alpine Meadows. I took my 5 dogs plus Tina, Dutch, Samantha, Bailey, Haley, Brodie and little Lana.

Tina was amazing! She dove in the snow...sometimes on her belly and sometimes on her back...just having a ball! Lana didn't mind the deep snow and chased Brodie and Haley everywhere. I think it was Bailey's first time in the snow and she had so much fun she needed a lot of coaxing to get back into the van.

On the way home, we had to stop for road work on Highway 20 to Grass Valley/Nevada City. They stopped us at a wonderful look out and the dogs and I shared the magnificent view. I was thinking about our hike...maybe they were too!

We need foster homes....people who know Aussies and don't have small children please.
It's staggering how many purebred Aussies are unclaimed in shelters. We try hard to take them all, but the reality is we can't. We're asking other groups to help and fortunately, people have adopted Aussies from shelters after seeing their postings on our site. YAHOO!

Some of our Aussies are hard to place....whether they're head strong, have OCD (in the case of Luigi!), are seniors or are ultra shy like Tiffany and Dutch from the puppy mill in El Dorado County. These are long term fosters, so unfortunately, Aussies are coming in faster than they are going out. If you have interest in helping any of these Aussies, please contact me at 530-268-1600. Not only would these kids benefit greatly from one-on-one attention and training in a foster home, but it opens spaces at the Sanctuary for urgent shelter dogs. I'm currently boarding some dogs at a cost of $25 per dog per night.

If you'd rather have an easy-going foster Aussie, we have those too! Samantha, Winnie, Levi, Brody and Tina for example. Let's not forget Lana our pocket dog, too!

We also are helping as many Aussies whose owners have either lost their homes or have critical illnesses...we take them at the Sanctuary when we can, like Lucy, Levi and Tina. All darling, easy-going Aussies.

People losing their homes are abandoning their pets in astounding numbers. Read this article about abandoned animals in Chicago.

We have only 2 of the 3 ancient red Aussies that came in as strays at the Sacramento County Shelter. One has already found her forever home. Papi and Noni are brother and sister and at least 12, maybe older. see video Talk about easy-going!

Go to Shelter Aussies to see the beauties who've lost their homes. Also look at Owner Listed Aussies...they are in trouble too. If you'd prefer a "go anywhere, little dog", please look at Pocket Dogs - little Lana is a kick!

Our kennels are installed and being used! This has been a 15 month project, but we're not yet finished. Your help has made this possible... THANK YOU! See the pics and videos! Read more »

It snowed in January... See the snow! The kids all love it, and we hope it snows again soon!

On Christmas eve, George Warren and his crew filmed our Sanctuary and all the dogs! See if you recognize our "stars"!

See Puppy Mill Update to learn about the bust that we initiated that shut it down after 30 years of illegal operation. We rehabilitated and rehomed 60 Aussies over 2 years. We have been fostering the last 5 for more than a year: Dutch, Noel, Lass, Tiffany and Bailey.

Sweet Seniors
We feel it's really important to make room for seniors who end up in shelters. Many have passed through our doors and found wonderful, loving homes. Some of them spend the rest of their lives with us. We lost three of our sweet seniors recently.

Rather than feeling sad, we hope that you feel encouraged that we were able to give them a wonderful life. They certainly enriched ours.

See our new memorial page.

Training plays a huge part in the relationship you have with your dog or dogs. We recommend and often require at least one obedience class with your dog. If we can't set you up with a trainer, go to www.apdt.com and click on "How to Choose a Trainer" to learn about different training approaches. Then click on "Dog Trainer Search" to find one near your home. We think you should observe a class before signing up.
