Scout and family
Scout is a 7 month old, 20 pound mini Aussie bought at 4 months of age. He is ultra timid and not a good family dog. He loves other dogs and gets along with cats and chickens. Hes ultra shy around strangers and children.

He lives with a 6 year old girl and nipped her so the family has asked us to find him an adult only home where he will get training and desensitization to his overwhelming fear of strangers. This boy is special needs. Fostered in Grass Valley. Contact: Kim at

Cooper NCAR #621

Cooper and family
Cooper cannot stop smiling this is one happy boy! She shelter staff at Sacramento County said he could climb a 6 foot chain link fence, but so far he hasnt wanted to get too far from me, so I think this is another example of leaving a" people oriented Aussie" by himself in a back yard way too long. Hes thin at about 42 pounds, about 1-2 years old and just adorable.

Volunteers groomed him and gave him a bath and he was an absolute doll, and I'm sure it was his first time in a tub! He likes to fetch a ball, likes to run, greets people enthusiastically and did I say that hes grinning most of the time? He'd do best as an only dog or with a nice female Aussie. Fostered in Grass Valley. Contact: Kim at

***ADOPTED 2/26***

Bailey and Pals
Baily is a 14 month old neutered black tri purchased as a puppy from Teralane Aussies. The beeder will not take him back and were happy to help him find a great home.
Baily is 40 pounds, housebroken, has had obedience training and knows sit, lie down, shake, fetch and wheres your bone? He is crate trained, playful with other dogs and is in a play group at the dog park with other dogs that play hard. Hes never snapped or become aggressive with another dog. He is excited to meet strangers and jumps up. Hell bring visitors tennis balls to throw for him. Hes playful with children and gentle with the 5 month old baby in his home he even licks her. Baily chases cats and squirrels.
He was purchased a few weeks before his owners found out they were pregnant. They moved to a townhouse with no yard. He used to get a lot of walks and go to the dog park daily for playdates. Since the baby came, their schedules changed drastically, he rarely gets out. He is getting stir crazy and they realize the lack of activity and yard isn't fair to him. He also smiles snorts when happy to see us. Bailey is still a puppy and has lots of energy to burn. Great Aussie boy. Baily is in Pleasanton.

Trip NCAR #604

Trip lives with Tom and Nancy in Los Altos where he has an orchard to explore, and will get a 2 mile leash walk daily. Hell also get to go along for coffee in town, and sometimes to Toms office. This is heaven for Trip and were so happy for him!

Trip was found with Dino (adopted) at Lake Chabot Park near San Leandro. He's a sensitive, wiggle butt who likes pushing in to you for pets. He hds severely dry skin that the vet determined is from flea bites because the skin scraping tested negative for parasites. He also had an infection in his eye that w treated with an eye antibiotic.

He's responded great with medications, antibiotics, and special shampooing every 2 weeks. Although his front teeth area bit worn down from biting at fleas, we all agree he's 3-5 years old since his teeth are almost pure white. We had him neutered and he's up to date on shots and heartworm negative. He's very attached to people. He rides in the van fine, is housebroken and loves children. He follows the two young boys in his foster home and solicits pets from them. He will sit for treats and is a slim 62 lbs. and could gain 8-10 pounds.

I took Trip and Scout on an Aussie Meetup adventure called: "hikers with kids".  He did great. 40+ kids and 5 dogs on the hike.  He growled at a very large male shepherd, but backed off immediately when I told him to.  He was great with HUGE numbers of kids and all the other dogs.  He walks well on a leash.

Let's find him a family! Fostered near Sacramento. Contact Kim at

***ADOPTED 2/14***

Doji NCAR #617

Doji went home to Sacramento with Sue and David. This is Aussie #4 for Sue who just loves her Aussie girls. We are so happy for Doji (now Zoe) because shell pal around with Sue all day, and be a Daddys girl when Dave comes home from work!

Doji is 4 years old. She is spayed, very people social, and also seems very dog social. Doji is a lower energy Aussie and easy going. She and Megan (above) were surrendered by their owner to Butte Humane in Chico because he kept them outside 24/7 and they weren't happy.

She's good with other dogs, but we've not tested her with cats. I like her alot, she's a good watch dog, but warms up to everyone who visits the Sanctuary and even gives kisses. She's a jewel and likes to stay close, but is not needy. Fostered in Grass Valley.

Rozi is a 10 week old red bi Aussie. Shes full of life, smart and quick and would do well in an Aussie-savvy home. Shes crate trained and in great health. We have her because she was a gift for someone who couldnt care for her. Shes from a breeder in Merced, but we dont know anything more than that. Fostered in Grass Valley.

Marty NCAR #618

Marty, now named BANJO, lives in Nevada City with Sheralyn and Larry where he gets to be with them all the time; whether hiking, going in their 5th wheel to Bodega Bay or just relaxing in the living room. Everyone is happy!
Marty is a 12 18 month old black tri who was a stray at the Sutter County shelter. Hes a small boy at about 38 pounds, but should fill out to be about 43-45 pounds. Hes got a natural bob, calm demeanor and likes to stay close. He hasnt show much playfulness with other dogs, but he gets along with them. He likes van rides and is a bit shy of new people, but then warms up. Hes a quiet boy. Fostered in Grass Valley. Contact: Kim at

***ADOPTED 2/5***
Rusty is very much the want-to-play youngster still at 1 1/2 years old. He is a 55 lb, unneutered male and needs some training. He is a fun guy and very striking with his rich beautiful red color. Our recommendation is that he not be with children under 8 - 10 because he tends to be somewhat mouthy. A few obedience classes would get him out of that very quickly and be a wonderful way to bond and give him some self confidence. He also is extremely frightened of having the choke chain put over his head. This poor guy was seen walking on a leash nicely down the main street in Murphys with his owners when all of a sudden they just took off the leash and got back in their car without him. The witness said, he just stood there shocked as he watched them drive away. Then he hung out in that area on his own for a couple of months and nobody could catch him. Finally someone caught him and called the shelter, and poor Rusty has at least been safe and getting regular food and water and attention from the volunteers up there since. Who knows what Rusty has been through in cases like this. Rusty will have to be neutered before you can take him home. If you want a nice playful pup to put some patient training and time into, please come and see Rusty.

When you call or come in, PLEASE ask for this dog by its adoption number A022411. CALL FIRST TO MAKE SURE THIS ANIMAL IS STILL AVAILABLE! This will help the staff a great deal. They cannot "hold" an animal for you, but if you are coming a long distance, they will hold for your drive time.

This pet's time is limited so come by or call today....
Calaveras County Animal Services is located off Hwy 49 in San Andreas on Mountain Ranch Road, (East of Stockton, in the foothills). Phone (209) 754-6509.

Brandy NCAR #564
Brandy is a 5 year old red tri who was surrendered to us at our Reunion . She has lived her life mostly outside, even at night. She can be friendly and solicit pets, but she can also be quite skiddish as shes not used to being around strangers all that much. She wasn't taken to obedience class nor did she get leash walks.

She comes to see who visits and gives kisses and allows petting, but can get scared with quick movements or when I take hold of her collar. Shes a nice girl who is timid and backs away from small children and commotion. She has bonded with her foster Dad who she's never more than 4 inches away from, but is not interested in anyone else in the household! We had her teeth cleaned, and she's healthy, but quite timid.

Fostered in Grass Valley . Contact: Kim at

Riley is an 8 year old black tri who was found in a park about 7 years ago. His finders kept him and found him to be a sweet, gentle boy who is good with toddlers and children of all ages. He's not good with larger dogs and is not a candidate for dog parks. He's great off leash hiking in open areas and does very well alone in the house. Riley is great with smaller dogs and plays nicely with a 10lb yorkie in his home, and does well with the 3 cats too. He has several chew toys and loves to play with the grand kids and run around the yard and with his Yorkie buddy - they even wrestle! Riley's family is downsizing and need to rehome him. Riley is in Campbell.
