Billabong
Billabong is a neutered male (born 10/02) purebred Australian Shepherd who came to Best Friends from local animal control after being abandoned by his owners. Billabong (41lbs.) would like to be an only dog, but loves people immensely! Behavior test "Billabong would be best with older kids due to some guarding of food, otherwise all handling was great."

He's a 9 month old Aussie X with a vibrant merle coat and a tail. He's a typical, silly, Aussie with lots of energy. He is fine with other dogs and walks pretty well on a leash. KC, NCAR #255

KC story

Why this boy isn't adopted yet is beyond me! KC (Casey) is a 7 year old bi-blue merle. He is a fabulous all around Aussie. He's easy-going, can live with other dogs, children and dog savvy cats. He loves to fetch anything, but because hip X-Rays show that he's got arthritis in both hips, the only fetching he does now is in the water! He loves to swim and it's the best exercise for him!

If allowed, he will curl up in your lap and lie on his back for as long as you can hold him. He also will play dead if you point your finger at him and say "BANG!" He can be a bit reactive to joggers, but he's not mean....just barks and can be corrected.

His owner couldn't care for him any longer so we took KC into foster care along with his 6 adorable puppies. He likes riding in the car, is as easy-going as it gets and says "good morning" in KC speak, "Woo....wooo.....wooo!" KC lived with his mom since birth and is totally enjoying all the new experiences he's having in foster care. Fostered in Sacramento.

Dodge, NCAR #151

Elmo and Ellie
This is DODGE with his new sister Ellie. Dodge is now ELMO!

Dodge was found dodging through traffic in Clovis, hence his name! He is very handsome, goofy and quite loving - we think he's about 10 - 14 months old.

He was checked by Dr. Faber, an ophthalmologist on 11/18. His vision is 100%! He was so good during the exam, too! This big boy is very affectionate, fun, sleeps in his crate at night, and knows sit and come. He lets Ivy and Posey climb all over him and is a good boy. He is learning that not everyone wants to take his toys away - but can get a little bossy with other young male dogs who want to share his toys! Dodge is ready to be someone's constant companion and enter into an obedience class! Contact: Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com

Holly
This beautiful blue merle Australian Shepherd named Holly is looking for a home. She's 11 years old and has lots of happy energy. She loves attention, loves to cuddle and is sure to greet you with a big wiggly body. She's a bit overweight right now so she's on a diet. She'll do best in a home with no other dogs or children. Her family surrendered her to the shelter....what a harsh thing to do to a family member.

Meet Holly at the Monterey SPCA, 1002 Highway 68. Phone: 831-373-2631

Bobby, NCAR #243

Bobby lives with Ken and Jennifer in Orangevale. He spends lots of time with his new parents and even gets to go to Jennifer's store with her during the day. Lucky Bobby is basking in all the attention!

Bobby wandered onto a woman's front yard one day. No one answered the newspaper ad or the fliers she posted. It's been several weeks, so we offered to take him into our program. This handsome black tri is 3-5 years old and mellow. He ignores cats and seems to be fine with female and male dogs.

This is a mellow, nice boy who is really easy to have around. He will be neutered as soon as he is heartworm free. On 11/2 he was treated a second time for heartworm, and he'll be ready for altering in December. If you would like to help pay for his heartworm treatment ($450) please use Paypal or mail a check to NorCal Aussie Rescue, PO Box 191661, Sacramento, CA 95819. Your donation is tax deductible! Fostered in Sacramento. Contact Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com.

Austin
Maddie, Rena and Austin in LA for Thanksgiving! Austin is very friendly and was a big hit with Grandma!

ADOPTED! WAHOO! This boy passed their temperament testing twice, but he was adopted to a family with a toddler and he air nipped at the toddler, so was returned. Staff LOVES this boy and knows that the toddler was pushing him and he couldn't get away.

RENA GOT THIS BOY OUTTA THERE! He's a great dog! He's on the mellow side and has 3 legs due to a severe injury that resulted in amputation.

Here's a quote from Amy at the Solano SPCA:
"Austin has a wonderful temperament very easy going attitude, submissive, mellow (yes a mellow herding dog), and just an all around happy guy. He passed his first temp eval. with flying colors, and did the same on the second. Our temp test is not a pass/fail test but, rather an evaluation to best match the dog with prospective owners. i.e. experienced owner, owner that as had at least one dog, etc. Austin has a very low energy level and would be great in almost any situation without small children. He looks to be around five years old. I don't know much about his past as he was a shelter transfer and we didn't get much info other than his shot record. I can tell you that he had a pretty mangled leg that looked like it had been that way for a while, he was very matted when we got him, and his front teeth show damage probably due to chewing on a kennel door? or something of that nature. The dog is very submissive especially when presented with a threatening posture. He hardly ever barks!"

Contact: Amy Peterson, Kennel Supervisor, Solano SPCA, 2200 Peabody Rd. Vacaville (707)448-7722 open Thur-Fri 2pm-6pm Sat-Sun 1pm-5pm, but Amy is willing to meet anyone at the shelter if these times wont work for you.

***ADOPTED 11/20***
Sheila
Sheila was found 3 weeks ago wandering through traffic in Fairfield. She was wearing a torn collar and was exhausted, thin and dirty. She looks like all Aussie with a docked tail. She had a microchip, so her rescuers went to her home only to find out that they had given her away to friends because she herded their llamas. Apparently, her friends left her outside alone all day and she escaped. She's living beautifully with children aged 4 and 6 years, with other dogs and is content to stay in the house during the day while her parents are at work. If you would like to meet sweet Sheila, please submit an adoption application and/or email Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com.

Foster, STAAR #3843
Foster is a blue merle, Australian shepherd/Australian cattle dog mix. This wonderful boy will be 2 in Dec. but still acts like a puppy and probably always will. He's full of fun and energy and would be great for the active home. He was raised on a horse ranch along with cats and other dogs. He loves everybody he meets always greeting them with a big smile. He's had lots of training and he's ready to do whatever you'd like. He has a natural herding ability and would be a great "working dog". Foster is available for adoption due to a severe, long term, family illness. You can meet him in Los Gatos, please call Sue at 831-335-8193.

***ADOPTED 11/18***
POSEY
Posey lives with Steve and Doris, who work from their home in Redwood City. Niko seems to love her little sister too!

Posey is about 7 weeks old who was turned into the Clovis Animal Shelter. She's lovey, sweet, playful and confident. She has two blue eyes and a shorter, merled coat. Posey really wants to be near me and usually under my feet. She seems to show little fear around 8 big Aussies sniffing her! Fostered in Sacramento. Contact: Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com

Ben is an 8 year old red tri who lived his life with a single man and mostly in the back yard. He doesn't show too well at the shelter in Reno and has been sitting there for 3 months. Let's get him out! His nick name is "Gentle Ben" so you can imagine his temperament!

He's a nice boy who hasn't seen much of the world, but is becoming much more people oriented thanks to the staff who have been caring for him.

Lola
Lovely Lola is a sweet as her name. She is 7-8 yrs young, 50lbs and has been well loved and cared for. Lola lived in a family of 7 dog, her guardian and numerous cats, goats and a various assortment of other critters. Tragically and suddenly Lola's guardian died.....leaving all the animals homeless. We took Lola and Sally into our foster program.

Lola is a dream dog. Well mannered, and great in the house....living with many cats and a kitten AND other dogs. Lola is housebroken and reliable in the yard and the house. This pretty lady has one brown eye and one blue eye. Those of you who know Aussies....know that they "dance" and "smile" .....she does both. Lola's foster mom says she dances and smiles and is a joy to have around. She has tested NEGATIVE for heartworm disease and is on preventative. She is spayed and current on her shots. Bubble Gum
Bubble is a 2 year old spayed Aussie/BC mix. She's DARLING and oh so easy-going. She loves everyone...kids, men, teens, it doesn't matter, she'll saunter up to say hello! These photos were taken at the dog park while she was sitting next to two complete strangers! She likes other dogs and cats and her only challenge is to lose about 10 pounds! She is very mellow and will probably have a bit more energy when she trims down. Her owner is moving into a nursing home and wants to find her a wonderful home. He's had her since she was an abandoned puppy and loves her more than anything. If you can find room in your heart and home for her, please contact Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com.

***ADOPTED***
Salty
Salty having fun at the beach.

Salty is a 2 1/2 year old blue merle. He's a sweet, 45 pound boy who was used for breeding most of his life. His registered name is Konocti Salty Dog. The breeder died and Salty's owner "rescued" him from his life in a kennel. Although he's come a long way, he is uncertain of new situations and prefers women to men. After almost a year or training and desensitization, he is being rehomed because he continues to exhibit fear when the husband is home. He wants to stay in his crate and is reluctant to come out.

I met Salty at a dog park and watched him have a good time meeting and playing with new dogs, including mine. He came to me when I called him and is a happy, albeit reserved boy. He loves his Mom and will come up to strangers when called. This is a unique situation that breaks his owners' hearts, but it's best for Salty to find a home where he feels more comfortable. He's had some training, but will blossom in an environment where his anxiety won't interfere with his ability to learn! He is crate trained, loves being in the car, is quiet in the house, likes leash walks and is a nice boy who has shown absolutely no aggression. He's not a fan of crowded places, strangers, and loud voices. He's lived with other dogs, livestock and we'll find out about cats. Salty is in Davis. Contact Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com.

***ADOPTED 11/6***
Sasha NCAR #248

Sash will turn two on November 3 and we want to make sure that she celebrates it in her forever home! Her family bought her from an "Aussie" breeder at 8 weeks of age. She was kept outside 24/7, the kids rarely played with her, but she was always happy to see them and gave them kisses. In August, the family gave her away to a couple who said they will spend more time with her, but after 3 weeks decided to give her up cause she isn't show quality. Neither owner had her spayed, and she hadn't seen a vet for over a year.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw Sasha come out of the van! I'm reading her pedigree and looking at her and thought that there must be a mistake - I have the wrong dog! She is registered with Australian Shepherd Club of America when in reality she is a mix....probably with Cattle Dog.

The best part of this story is that Sasha is a sweet, sweet girl! I've spoken with both of her former owners and know she has a solid temperament. She's been around children, toddlers and other dogs and does fine. She loves coming in and out of the house with us and spent her first night in our bedroom in a fluffy bed in her crate. She is heartworm negative and we just had her spayed! If you would like to meet Sasha, please submit an adoption application. Fostered in Sacramento. Contact: Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com

Elliott NCAR #206

Elliott is Andre and Angela's first dog. They particularly wanted an Aussie for their temperament, trainability and energy level ~ and they feel they hit the jackpot with Elliott! Elliott lives nearby in Sacramento so we'll get to see him!

This boy is an exceptionally friendly 2 year old black tri who was a stray into the Sacramento County Shelter. He's got an adorable personality and loves everyone! This spunky boy gives kisses. He has a lot of sweet energy and everyone he meets is his best friend.

He's getting along with the other Aussies in his foster home. He fetches and is a happy-go-lucky boy who knows simple commands: sit, down, come, stay & cookie! Our vet determined he has a heart murmer (hole in his heart) which doesn't effect him at all. The vet couldn't predict when his heart might give out and said that he could live a long, happy life. There is no reason to monitor or alter his daily routine.

Elliot has a lot of energy, LOVES to ride in the car and sticks to me like glue. He's fine off leash and needs a little work on a leash! He's been around horses and doesn't bother them. This is a great Aussie!!!

Update from his foster mom 9/25: He's doing really, well. They all play non-stop and are very entertaining to watch. He and Niko were made for each other. This dog certainly does not act
like he has a heart murmur! He's also learned a lot of new things - he knows "stay" now and knows that he has to sit before the door opens, to get a treat and to get his meals. He's very smart and takes his cues from the other pooches. He also no longer tries to bolt out the door to get to the car. As for the nipping, it is almost a thing of the past. I've been working with all of them to calm down before I walk in the door. Having a screen door really helps. I don't walk in the door until they are calm and sitting - takes about 30 seconds for things to
settle down. It's really worked well and I rarely get nipped any more.

He really is a joy to be around now. He even came to work with me last Friday for 1/2 a day
and everyone just fell in love with him! Fostered in Hayward. Contact: Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com

***Adopted 11/06/05***

Without a doubt, Skip's found his forever home.

Skip
Skip is a 2 year old Velcro blue merle Aussie who knows how to jump fences. He wants to be with his people and/or a group of animals and not left alone. When he jumped the fence, he'd usually come back home by sitting on the front step or jumping the fence back into the yard. He ended up hanging out in a park with the caretaker for a few days and nights. Because of his microchip, we contacted his former owner. She had adopted him from a shelter and soon realized she couldn't manage him and surrendered him to us.

Skip is a handsome, easy-going guy who likes to hang with his pack. He has proven great with a 4 year old girl and children of all ages. He's being fostered on a small ranch where he has no interest in going anywhere. He either hangs out while his parents work with around the property or goes with them in the car - he's a good traveler. Skip is afraid of firecrackers and thunder and will hide and dig trying to get away from the noise. He stays in a large, outdoor kennel when no one is home and does just fine. He isn't happy confined in a crate. This is a perfect ranch Aussie! Fostered in Lodi. Contact Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com.

***ADOPTED 11/05/05***

Lucy, NCAR #240
Lucy is a beautiful Black Tri girl picked up in Wheatland as a stray. Look at those eyes! She had a rabies tag on her from 1999, so the shelter called the vet and found out she hadn't been seen there since 1999.....so we know she's at least 6! The shelter tried all the phone numbers the vet had for her former owner but they were old and her owners have apparently moved on.

Lucy is very biddable, LOVES children and ignores cats. She doesn't jump up on people, sat down nicely for her leash to be put on and was playful with both my male and female Aussie. This is a "bullet-proof" dog! She let me check her teeth and touch her all over and walks fine on a leash. She went on an off leash romp at the river with us recently and proved that she wants to stick around....and she enjoyed going into the river. She's shed some weight and her coat is looking beautiful. This is a great girl! Fostered in Marysville. Contact Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com.

***ADOPTED 11/5/05***

Merlin lives with Kendra and Jim and his Aussie sister Layla in San Francisco. They enjoy an active lifestyle that includes trips to Ft. Funston and their parents' vineyard in Sonoma. The lucky pups get to go to work with Jim, too!

Merlin NCAR #250
Merlin is a 12 month old, mini Blue Merle Aussie with one blue and one brown eye. He's adorable, loving, sweet tempered and agile! He weighs only 34 pounds and can climb a 6 foot fence. He loves to jump up on things to be at your level and get hugs.

His previous owner let him in the house for the first 3 months of his life, then left him outside on 20 acres day and night. Poor Merlin chased after his truck every morning and jumped the fence in an attempt to be with him. Merlin ended up in the Sacramento county shelter 3 times - how he escaped injury is a miracle. He was neutered upon his last release from the shelter, and the owner asked us for help. Merlin is ready for obedience, agility or would happily be a companion dog.

He could go to the office or stay at home with his person or family. He can't be left alone in a back yard and will bark if left alone in the house. He would do well with a playful, young Aussie sibling! He suffers from separation anxiety and will get out of the yard to find his person. This is a perfect small Aussie for an active individual or family where someone is with him most of the time and take him along on outings. Because he often barks when left alone, (although it's getting better) an apartment or condo may not be best. Fostered in Sacramento. Contact: Kim at kim@norcalaussierescue.com
